Dropped objects are one of the most persistent and dangerous risks on mine sites — responsible for 9% of workplace fatalities across Australia.
On multi-level worksites, even a small tool or loose component can become a high-velocity hazard. For miners working on platforms, walkways, and elevated structures, a single dropped object can lead to severe injury, fatality, or major equipment damage.
According to Safe Work Australia, 16 workers lost their lives in 2022 due to being struck by falling objects, with each incident costing businesses more than $23 million in direct and indirect consequences. In an industry where people work above, below, and around high-risk structures, controlling dropped objects is essential to protecting lives and operational
continuity.
Common Risks Include:
- Unsecured tools, equipment, or loose materials falling from elevated walkways or platforms
- Gaps in handrails, grids, or stairways that allow objects to slip through unnoticed
- Environmental factors — vibration, wind, movement — dislodging items without warning
